98C 051-002 is a maincrop crisping variety, with excellent long term sugar and low
defects, comparable or superior to current standards. In trials at Cambridge, sugars
and dry matter were tested at 120 days after planting. Results showed that 98C 051-002
glucose had declined to almost zero and sucrose to a level where storage would be
possible, comparing well to Lady Rossetta, Saturna and significantly better than
Hermes. By 90 days 98C 051-002 had produced 20% dry matter, 2% more than Hermes.
This differential was maintained throughout the season.
98C 051-002 has good heat and drought tolerance and high yield potential overseas
(120% yield of current varieties in Spanish trial). It has potential for significantly
better disease and pest resistance than current varieties, partial pallida resistance
and better resistance to blight. It has good resistance to bruising and internal
defects. Improved tuber numbers produces 1 or 2 more than Hermes.
